OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS



The Academic Libraries of Indiana became a functioning organization on May 27th, 2003 with the adoption of the articles of incorporation, by-laws and the election of officers. The task forces below are those of this organization although these task forces continue the work that led to the formation of ALI and the development of the proposed initiative sent to the Lilly Endowment, Inc.on December 18, 2002. 1. Database Licensing



Charge: Determine options (models) for the process of identifying an expanded set of online resources to license, and models for short and long term funding. Make recommendations for establishing expertise on licensing terms and legal aspects, as well as negotiation strategies. Give consideration to the issues of authentication and digital archiving for these resources as appropriate. Provide an estimated budget, and an assessment of the broader impact on strategies for legislative funding, such as issues related to the public good.

2. Distance Education / Off-Campus Library Services



Charge: Explore issues and opportunities related to distance education and off-campus library use; identify distance education/off-campus library related needs for ALI consideration; explore possible cooperative or coordinated projects and services related to distance education or off-campus library use among ALI members; identify other organizations and institutions with which ALI could cooperate and explore potential joint programs or projects that might improve library services to distance or off-campus users.

3. Government Documents Light Archives Planning Group



Charge: Make recommendations for shared storage options for federal and state documents, including facilities, policies (including last copy, preservation, duplication issues), access and delivery issues, and reference.

4. Resource Sharing



Charge: Examine the consortial and technical models for creating a virtual or physical union catalog on which patron initiated lending and delivery would be based. Identify the policies that would need attention for consortial support of such services, including net lender reimbursement, load balancing, walk-insupport of library users, patron loan rules, delivery systems, etc. Identify implications for other resource sharing programs, including statewide impact. Provide an estimated budget.

6. Strategic Plan Task Force



Charge: Review the success and continuing challenges of the existing strategic plan; complete an environmental scan for academic libraries in general and for Indiana academic libraries specifically; survey members to determine ALI priorities for 2007-2012; draft a strategic plan for 2007-2012.
